Acne Studios change in direction?
Main Post:
I'm not the biggest Acne Studios head, but I remember back in 2016-2018 it was a highly coveted brand for me. The minimalist, smart, almost normcore-leaning thing they were doing at the time tickled a certain spot and embodied what we've come to call quiet luxury. I stopped looking into their clothes after a while because I had other priorities and found different brands that spoke to my evolving style.
I've come full circle, and am seeing their products again on different marketplaces and mentioned on fashion tiktok and I've noticed they've gone in a totally different direction these days. Trading their once coveted Ace stay cash jeans for the now trendy super baggy fit, and going from Scandinavian minimalism to rave-inspired aesthetic (borrowing a ton from Balenciaga's playbook).
I just wonder when this change happen? Does anyone else notice this? Does it feel inauthentic, or have these themes been there all along, and I just never noticed.
Let me add I'm not hating, and I don't dislike the new direction. I'm just a big fan of fashion history, and I'm trying to create a roadmap in my head.
Top Comment: it’s been about 3 years. massive price increases, changes in design, celebrity influencers, etc. ive stopped buying acne. our legacy, studio nicholson, mfpen, norse projects, NN07, auralee are some brands that come to mind that are closer to 2016 acne.
MFA Brand MegaReview: Acne Studios - June 10, 2019
Main Post:
This is a series of community reviews of brands/designers, inspired by u/inherentlyawesome’s Brand Love/Hate series.
The brand of the week: Acne Studios.
Acne Studios is a luxury fashion house based in Stockholm, Sweden. It was cofounded in 1996 by Jonny Johansson and Tomas Skoging. They began by selling jeans to a small group of close friends, eventually expanding the brand into more than 40 different countries and 450+ different stores.
Design-wise the brand could be described as Scandinavian minimalism with a fashion-forward mindset. Some items are simple and would fit into any minimalist wardrobe, others feature loud prints, odd sizing and other interesting details. Johansson himself was stated that he enjoys playing with sizing, and you can see it season-to-season.

This is a space to talk about the good, the bad, and the ugly. You can write a raving review or a scathing critique. What items are worth looking into, and which ones should be avoided? How's the fit? Bad luck with quality control/quality in general? Is their customer service good? What items stand out to you?
Feel free to review the stuff you have or talk about the ethics/direction of the brand in general. Where are they going? Where have they been? Hate them or love them? Let us know!
Last week's brand was 3Sixteen. Next week it’ll be J.Crew!
Top Comment: I've been buying Acne stuff since around 97. Last time I did a clean out, around 65% of my everyday clothes were from Acne and I find them a great brand for that. I've bought across the board; Nash are my go-to T shirts, I own footwear, outerwear, jeans, scarves, sweats, jumpers, trousers, high-end items, and stuff from Face. Think I'm fairly qualified on this one. The Good Fantastic build quality on nearly everything (besides shirts - the shirts are trash) Materials used are always decent quality Footwear generally built on a wider footplate, so good for people like me with...erm a wider foot Stay Black/Stay Cash jeans are the best color retaining black jeans available Wonderfully helpful staff A solid design ethos, which has always extended beyond the "scandie minimalism" thing. A decent range of products across price points Nash Tees are amazing. Fairview sweats are equally as great Adrians are the comfiest shoes I have ever worn Rivers are a brilliant jeans cut, with the usual high standards of construction I used to hate the scarves, then I bought one last year and turns out historic me was very wrong The branding has come on leaps and bounds in the past 5 years or so The Bad Inconsistent sizing across models. Really inconsistent sizing across models There is always one tee design per season that looks fucking horrible. The shirts. Jebus, the shirts are bad, which is weird as the suiting is very well made. Sunglasses aren't great either Tracking down some items can be hard, even in season Smaller stockists aren't allowed to sell online, which seems a bit odd Folk who don't have an Acne stockist near them can easily fall foul of the sizing issues Second hand Acne doesn't hold value for the most part. Some items, such as Ace Stay Cash jeans, Horse Hoof shoes, suiting and runway pieces are the best investment if you want to resell. Large fake market, though most fakes are garbage quality and easy to spot. Misc r/acnestudios get involved

I’ve gone through and through with my passion for Acne, it’s a brand I like to associate myself the most along with Uniqlo and Atoms (relatively new).
To me what stands out the most are; the materials, an edgy yet thoughtful style and consistent effort for quality and creativity.
I am curious what resonates most with other folks in the community. Jeans are my favorite btw!
Top Comment: Jeans - 100% - chinos - the quality - design - fit - and I don’t like everything they do - but my closet is 70 % acne - the stuff just lasts. Along with our legacy. The Swedes really know im how to design and make quality items. Acne also understands proportions. If that makes sense

I just entered college and put around $500 to the side from side gigs and work. I’m looking for some high quality jeans and was wondering which ones you guys would recommend. Is the quality worth the high price? Thanks :)
Top Comment: Hi! I work as in store sales associate for a store in North America. I can tell you right off the bat the baggier styles such at 2021, 2022, 2023, and 1981s are not likely to go on sale anytime soon (at least in store or online). You may get lucky on a 3rd party retailer site but I still recommend trying them on in person as the baggier styles tend to run 1-2 sizes too large. We have bi-annual sales so the next one you can expect will be in the Winter. But, the most popular denim styles tends to carry over into the following season so it’s unlikely you will see the looser fit or baggy fit go on sale. Sometimes a less popular color of the styles is discounted though! Whether the price point is justified is up to you. I think the denim is the best bang for your buck out of everything we carry. It ages beautifully and will get better with continuous wear and tear. Keep in mind, most in demand styles WILL get more expensive over time. Therefore, I encourage you to try them on in person and get a feel for the quality and fit yourself. And decide if the investment is worth it to you! Hope this helps :)

Brands for jeans like Acne Studios
Main Post:
I have a pair of jeans from Acne Studios that I love. I bought them before the pandemic, and one of them will soon wear out. So, I started looking at the prices, and they've almost doubled since I bought them. I really like the quality, the fact that they're made in Italy, how they feel different on me, and how they're like my little treasures. I just want to buy another pair, but I don't want to pay close to 1 , 000.
What brands that are made in Italy area round 200–300? What other brands have similar quality?
A really good friend told me to look at AllSaints, but their jeans look great and are made in Turkey or China. So, I'm unsure whether to buy them on discount or just pass. What do you think?
Top Comment: Is there a reason why you aren’t considering Made in Japan? Japan makes the best denim in the world now - go to r/rawdenim and it’s full of Japanese denim, most of it in your price range.
Brand Love/Hate: Acne Studios - September 15, 2015
Main Post:
Last week we checked out S.F.-based Taylor Stitch in case you missed it.
Tomas Skoging and Jonny Johansson founded Stockholm-based Acne Studios (then ACNE) in 1996. The label's name is an acronym for Ambition to Create Novel Expressions, though Johansson has stated that "he liked the idea of 'appropriating a difficult word' and making it cool." Johansson split off from his co-founder a couple of years later to begin Acne Studios, which produced its first full collection in 1998. (ACNE still exists as a separate entity under Skoging but does not produce clothing.) Acne Studios has developed a global presence thanks to Johansson's leadership and remains emblematic of stark Scandinavian minimalism. Johansson isn't too preoccupied by his critics: "I think sometimes I'm seen as boring . . . [b]ut it's that area of fashion where I feel comfortable.".
Acne Studios offers pretty much every article of clothing practicable in its men's and women's lines.

Top Comment: Love: Their jeans. Undisputably the best choice for black denim at the price point. Hate: Their "feminist" clothing from the past season. I've never liked the idea of politics being seen as "fashionable", and it seems more like a very weak attempt at being subversive and controversial without really having any substance or ethos behind it.
